Everything old is new again…and vice versa

Murder for Two is a hilarious musical murder mystery that spoofs, celebrates, and reimagines both the murder mystery and musical theatre genres. First produced by Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in 2011, Playwrights Kellen Blair and Joe Kinosian have concocted a theatrical and literary love letter that honors the work of Agatha Christie, the Marx Brothers, Alfred Hitchcock, Frank Loesser, and Charles Ludlam.

On the eve of his surprise birthday party, legendary American novelist, and guest of honor, Arthur Whitney is shot dead by an unknown killer. Seizing the opportunity to impress the chief, wannabe detective Marcus Moscowicz, with help from his invisible colleague Lou, takes charge of the investigation in hopes to crack the case before the real detective arrives on the scene. Contending with a cast of colorful and baffling suspects, Marcus plunges head first into a world of criminal lunacy, song, and dance.

When Kinosian and Blair first began work on Murder for Two their aim was to create a unique musical comedy that was both entertaining and producible. Playing on their individual strengths, the dynamic duo landed upon a riotous 90-minute musical performed by two actors who also double as the show’s musicians. Murder for Two encompasses everything that I love about the theatre. The story is smart yet funny, the characters complicated yet endearing, and the score is intricate yet hummable. I am so proud and honored to be back at TAM for the 50th Anniversary Season, and cannot wait to share this ingenious musical with our audience.

A show like Murder for Two would not be successful without a fearless Producing Artistic Director, a collaborative production team, and an insanely talented pair of actor/pianists. I am extremely grateful for the creativity, courage, and charisma of this cast and crew, and hope that you enjoy this production as much as we have enjoyed creating it.
