Enjoy a night with the hot sounds of the Opus One Big Band as they warm up Monmouth?s historic Cumston Hall for a memorable night of music. The Opus One Big Band, which is under the direction of Dale Perkins and features some of the finest big band musicians in central Maine, will perform a concert to benefit Cumston Hall and the Monmouth Academy Band music program on Saturday, March 10th, 7:30 p.m. The experience of hearing a big band in one of Central Maine?s most historic theaters will delight those who remember of good old days of big band music, and will introduce newcomers to this unique brand of music performance that is seldom available live. In the tradition of Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Gene Krupa, and Glenn Miller, the Opus One Big Band has planned a concert full of favorites as well as lesser known tunes. The program includes the jazz and swing standards of the 30s and 40s, including: Sing, Sing, Sing; Sweet Georgia Brown, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Woodchopper?s Ball, Hay Burner, Jersey Bounce, The Way You Look Tonight, Four Brothers, Stars Fell on Alabama, and the number one big band song of all time, In The Mood. The show will also include some pieces that were written after the heyday of big bands, including the 1961 Horace Silver hit Filthy McNasty, Taste of Honey which was made popular by Herb Albert in the 70s, Centerpiece from 80s jazz composer Frank Mantooth, and Jazz Police, a composition of contemporary artist Gordon Goodwin and his Big Phat Band. The Opus One Big Band has been playing for over twenty years is currently under the direction of Dale Perkins. Band members include Joe Kingston, Barry Saunders, Larry Williams, John Morneau, and Tom Stott on sax; Michelle Kingston, John Foss, Dave Langzatel, Brian Nadeau, and Dianne Fenleson on trumpet; Lee Prager, Meg Hausman, Doug Kennedy and Megan Kennedy on trombone; and Ken LaBrecque, Jim Perkins, Greg Lindholm and Dan Schneider make up the rhythm section. In the tradition of great bands of the late 30?s, the Opus One Big Band brings their own vocalist, Suzanne Proulx. The Friends of Cumston Hall is a group of volunteers who are dedicated to the ongoing restoration and celebration of one of central Maine?s prize performance halls. This concert is part of an on-going series to bring a variety of live musical performers to Cumston Hall.
